Fans casually watched and milled about, interacted with rappers and staff, drank at one of the bars, or leaned on the metal barricade around the battle area, securing placement for the next battle and bobbing their heads to the beat. ![]() Between battles, a DJ played sets, or music videos were screened on TVs attached to the room’s walls, many videos featuring rappers in attendance. There was an atmosphere of respect and a collective ownership of the proceedings, recognizable as a hallmark of motivated independent scenes and cult cultural followings-think any theatre currently showing The Room, or bands with a fan base that mobilizes annually for the summer tour or festival, e.g. ![]() ![]() The event had a communal, relaxed, informal but professional tone, set from the top down, the organizers, to the staff, the volunteers, the rappers and finally the fans.
